Mutant crabs!

Okay, not quite. Rather, how about giant deep-sea squid and glowing shrimp? And crabs that can see ultraviolet light? Rather than being the stuff of science fiction or Lovecraftian horror, these are real creatures recently discovered by researchers working in the Gulf of Mexico. Parts of the creature known as the pontellid copepod glow fluorescent green when viewed under blue light. The top image highlights the male's specialized antenna and claw on its last leg (on the right) for grabbing females. In the bottom image, the female has an oblong sperm packet attached at her tail.
