"Child Mummy Wows Egyptologists" [updated 12:10 AM 4 Aug 2005]

Here.

All without cracking open the case or cutting open bandages... "Wow" is right. I'm keeping half an eye on Silicon Graphics' website for more pictures - their software made the imaging possible, and they're showing it off at SIGGRAPH 2005 sometime this afternoon. The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum & Planetarium (who've had this mummy on display since 1930) can be found here.

[update: SGI has a press release here; the pictures they have available for download are higher resolution than the Wired JPGs, but have restrictive covenants attached to them... 'for press use only'. Feh. - ps]

WOW!!! How impressive. I remember going to the Field Museum last year in Chicago and visiting the Tombs of Egypt. I cannot begin to tell you the fascinating tombs and mummified bodies they had. Even babies that were stillborn are all mummified. I was sorry that we had such little time; we rushed through it. I can't wait to go back and see everything.

Absolutely terrorific posts, protected static. Hope you're enjoying being a front pager here as much as I'm enjoying it.

Aw, shucks... mumble, mumble

Yeah, so far, so good :)

bella: If you ever manage to make it to NYC, the Met has an absolutely incredible Egyptian section, incl. a small temple completely reconstructed inside this giant blackened-glass atrium. Sitting on black marble, surrounded by reflective pools, it looks like something that might have inspired the set designers of Stargate.

I've never made it to the Field Museum myself - my Chicago trips to date have been of the 'roadtrip from for a concert' or 'overnight for a wedding' variety.
