The White City

The American transition from the gaslight era to the electric era was perhaps epitomised best by The World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. The construction of the fairgrounds symbolised America's emerging industrial might like nothing else, and introduced many enduring American icons: Cracker Jack, Shredded Wheat, and Juicy Fruit all made their debut here. So did the Ferris wheel, the midway, and perhaps, the modern serial killer as well. For Victoriana buffs, this Tuesday's release of the DVD EXPO: Magic of the White City will probably provide a must-have addition to the audio-visual collection. Narrated by Gene Wilder, the documentary covers the fair from uncertain start through glorious triumph to tragic finish.
