By my ear, the sound of someone breathing, with the hint of a rasp at the edge of their throat. In out, in out. My fingernails cut the palms of my hands I had my fists clenched so hard. I wanted to lash out, I wanted to turn on the light. Anything that didn't involve opening my eyes to see what was beside me. But I couldn't make myself move.
